Limbrel is the first prescription product developed and formulated specifically to safely meet the distinctive nutritional requirements of patients with osteoarthritis through dual inhibition (COX + LOX) of arachidonic acid metabolization and anti-oxidant action rather than COX-2 selective inhibition. Clinical studies have shown Limbrel to be effective in safely managing the unique nutritional needs of osteoarthritis with side effects comparable to placebo.

Limbrel contains flavocoxid, a proprietary blend of natural ingredients from phytochemical food source materials. Flavocoxid is comprised primarily of the flavonoids such as baicalin and catechin. These or similar ingredients can be found in common foods such as soy, peanuts, cauliflower, kale, apples, apricots, cocoa and green tea. The fact that these and similar ingredients have been widely researched and used in medicinal products in other countries also supports biacalin and catechin’s safety and effectiveness. Limbrel provides levels of these	flavonoids needed to meet the distinctive nutritional requirements of people with osteoarthritis and cannot be obtained through simply changing the diet.

Rx Medical Nutrition: A Different Approach
Limbrel is the first prescription product that provides for the safe daily nutritional management of osteoarthritis. Nutritional Management in this context is grounded in that Limbrel’s ingredients are natural food-based or dietary ingredients proven effective in helping to manage osteoarthritis. Limbrel is classified as a medical product according to FDA regulation. Specifically, Limbrel meets the definitional requirements of what FDA terms a “medical food” product. As in other food-based products, Limbrel’s ingredients are safe for use across a wide range of people.

Diet and Osteoarthritis
While weight loss is important to many osteoarthritis patients, I want to highlight the importance of what we eat in our daily diet and how this may contribute to or help osteoarthritis.

In recent years, prominent medical researchers have investigated the connection between diet and osteoarthritis more deeply and learned that nutritional intake from the daily diet make a difference. What we eat affects not only the amount of osteoarthritis which can occur, but also the progression of osteoarthritis. This should come as no surprise as numerous diseases and health conditions have been linked to dietary intake or lack of dietary intake of foods. Birth defects occur due to a lack of intake of folic acid, osteoporosis due to a lack of calcium and vitamin D3 and cardiovascular disease due to an excess of saturated fats all are a result of improper diet.

Important foods for people with osteoarthritis are ones that contain anti-oxidants, flavonoids and essential fatty acids, particularly omega-3s. Each of these has been shown to have beneficial effects for people with osteoarthritis in studies of diet and osteoarthritis. A national 8-year study sponsored by the National Institutes of Health proved that consuming more of certain anti-oxidants slowed down the progression of osteoarthritis. Food sources with higher anti-oxidant values include citrus fruits and juices, nuts, vegetables and whole grains which provide the anti-oxidant vitamins C and E.

Flavonoids have been found to be natural anti-oxidants and anti-inflammatories. Specific foods with high values in the particular flavonoids which may be helpful in osteoarthritis include: apples, blueberries, green tea, broccoli, tomatoes and soy. In cultures where flavonoid intake is high, there is less chronic disease like osteoarthritis. Several test tube studies of cartilage-containing cells have found that omega-3 fatty acids decrease inflammation and reduce the activity of enzymes that destroy cartilage in osteoarthritis. 5 In addition, several clinical trials in rheumatoid arthritis patients have shown that omega-3s help patients feel better with this type of arthritis. 6 Good sources of omega 3 fatty acids include oily fish and dark green leafy vegetables.

However, improving your diet and osteoarthritis condition is not simple. In fact, if you were to make 100% of your diet anti-oxidant or flavonoid rich foods, you still would not derive enough to nutritionally manage your osteoarthritis. Adding to this, numerous studies indicate older adults often do not adequately digest and absorb these needed nutrients even if they have eaten the appropriate foods. Therefore, products like Limbrel which provide concentrated amounts of the most needed flavonoids and anti-oxidants, are necessary for the daily nutritional management of osteoarthritis.

FDA regulations require that Limbrel be used only under a physician’s supervision and therefore, it is available by prescription only.

In several clinical trials of interventions designed to lower plasma cholesterol, the reductions in coronary heart disease mortality have been offset by an unexplained rise in suicides and other violent deaths.

Investigations into whether depressive illness is related to low plasma cholesterol concentrations in men of 50 years and older. In 1985-87, Beck depression questionnaires were obtained from 1020 white men, aged 50-89 years. Among men aged 70 years and older, depression was three times more common in the group with low plasma cholesterol than in those with higher concentrations. Depressive symptom scores correlated significantly and inversely with plasma cholesterol concentrations, even after adjustment for age, health status, number of chronic illnesses, number of medications, and exercise, as well as measured weight loss and change in plasma cholesterol in the previous 13 years.

The finding that low plasma cholesterol is associated with depressive symptoms in elderly men is compatible with observations that very low total cholesterol may be related to suicide and violent death. Since cholesterol lowering in the general population is widely recommended, this observation warrants further investigation.

The debate about possible adverse effects associated with low or lowered serum cholesterol has raised important scientific questions concerning the links between lipids and behavior. One of the most unexpected findings has been an association between cholesterol-lowering treatment and accidental death. A similar association has also emerged among studies, with higher-than-expected numbers of suicide deaths in the lowest cholesterol groups. These observations have prompted speculation that behavioral or emotional disturbances could be part of the process linking lipids and accidental death.

Two conclusions are drawn from the literature. One is that understanding the relationship between the biology of lipids and the psychobiology of mood is demonstrably an important scientific and public health issue. The second is that the introduction of new treatments or preventive programs should include a careful evaluation of the psychological as well as the physical effects.

A Blue Zone is a region of the world where people commonly live active lives past the age of 100 years. As determined by scientists and demographers. The name Blue zone was first used in a scientific article on centenarians in Sardinia in 2004. Blue Zones is also the name of a related project from Dan Buettner’s Quest Network, Inc.

Five Blue Zones have been discovered:

Sardinia, Italy: Where men reach the age of 100 years at an amazing rate.

The islands of Okinawa, Japan: A group that is among the longest lived on Earth.

Loma Linda, California: America’s longevity all-stars.

Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica

Icaria, Greece: The island of Ikaria has the highest percentage of 90 year-olds in the planet – nearly 1 out of 3 people make it to their 90s. Ikarians have about 50 percent less heart disease and almost no dementia”.

Residents of the first three places produce a higher rate of centenarians, suffer less disease, and enjoy more healthy years of life.

The people inhabiting Blue Zones share common lifestyle characteristics that contribute to their longevity. Among the lifestyle characteristics shared among the Okinawa, Sardinia, and Loma Linda Blue Zones are the following:

* Family is put ahead of other concerns.

* Centenarians do not typically smoke.

* Mostly Plant-Based Diet

* Constant Moderate Physical Activity

* Social Engagement at all ages

* Legumes are commonly consumed.

More on the Icarians…

About 20 percent of Icarians’ longevity can be attributed to their genes. The rest is a result of their healthy lifestyle. People in Icaria live in mountain villages that necessitate activity every day. They garden much of their own food is common culture. Their diet is very high in olive oil and in fruits and vegetables. Interestingly, considering they live on an island, Icarians don’t consume much fish. Historically, pirates pushed the inhabitants farther up the mountain, where they grew accustomed to having less access to seafood. Especially notable is their consumption of herbal teas all day long, averaging several cups a day, most of which are diuretics. Diuretics lower blood pressure, so it’s only logical that Icarians would have lower rates of heart disease.

The four tenets of the Mediterranean Diet

1. Stock your pantry and cook at home more and use whole, unprocessed ingredients and control portion sizes, salt and calories. Stocking your pantry and freezer with Mediterranean-inspired staples like canned tomatoes, olives, whole-wheat pasta and frozen vegetables can facilitate the preparation and cooking process.

2. Get most of your protein from beans and fish. Get your protein from beans, nuts and other plants by displacing meat to lower your saturated-fat intake while adding healthful nutrients, like fiber and antioxidants. Start with a few small changes: Aim to make a plant-based dinner, like meatless chili once or twice a week. Or make the focus of the meal whole grains and vegetables and think of meat as a flavoring; for example, use a little diced pancetta in a tomato sauce for pasta.

3. Make olive oil your staple fat. Give heart-healthy olive oil as well as other plant-based oils like canola and walnut oil star billing over saturated-fat-laden, LDL-cholesterol-raising butter, lard or shortening–even in baking. Saute your vegetable dishes in olive oil to highlight their flavor. Look for a yellow or green olive oil with a rich smell and taste. Pale, odorless oils are fine for baking and frying and are still high in heart-healthy monounsaturated fats but lack the health benefits of olive oil.

4. Enjoy a glass of wine with meals. Enjoy wine, especially red, in moderation during meals, never drinking alone outside of the meal and never in excess. It should be remembered that we drink wine “to enjoy life, not to forget life!” Drinking wine increases HDL (good) cholesterol, may help regulate blood sugar and can even help you digest your food and absorb its nutrients. Wines, also deliver a dose of heart-healthy resveratrol.

We know that the Japanese have some of the healthiest cuisine in the world, but the little islands of Ry?ky? (of which Okinawa is the largest) have taken healthy eating to another level. Okinawans regularly live to 110 years old by munching meals that are even healthier than the traditional Japanese diet.

Okinawans enjoy a nutrient-rich, low calorie diet that focuses on fresh, local vegetables, fruits, soy, legumes, whole grains and a small amount of fish. Okinawans rarely eat meat or foods that are high in fat or sugar. The traditional caloric density of Okinawans’ food is very low-they tend to eat only 1 calorie per gram.

Native Okinawans have a saying: “Hara hachi bu,” which means “Eat only until you are 80% full.” It takes about 20 minutes for your stomach to send the signal to your brain that you are full. If you eat until you feel 100% satisfied, then you have actually overeaten! Eat slowly, chew well, and enjoy the ceremony of the meal.

Only products with all organic ingredients may be labeled as “100% Organic“. Only products with organic content that is greater than or equal to 95% may be labeled as: “Organic” or bear the organic logo.

Multi-ingredient products with 70-95% organic content may have the declaration: “Contains x% Organic Ingredients“. These products may not use the organic logo and/or the claim “Organic”. Multi-ingredient products with less than 70% organic content may only contain organic claims in the product’s ingredient list. These products may not use the organic logo.

Certified organic products must also bear the name of the certification body that has certified the product as organic. CFIA website lists certification bodies and Candian Organic Growers webiste for the producers.

Organic products sold within the province of origin are subject to provincial organic regulations. The provinces of Quebec and British Columbia have organic certification systems in place, while other provinces are considering developing their own system.

Imported products must meet the requirements of “Canada Organic”. Should imported products bear an organic logo, the statement “Product of” or “Imported from” must appear near the logo or designations. In June 2009, Canada and the US entered into an arrangement recognizing our national organic systems as equivalent.

Benefits of Organic

Scientific data shows organic foods contains significantly less pesticide residues and at lower concentrations. Organic also restricts the use of most chemical additives in foods. Synthetic pesticides, fertilizers and confined livestock operations are not permitted in organic production. This means that there is lower risk of pesticides, nutrients, manure, and antibiotics affecting the soil, ground water, rivers, lakes, atmosphere and the life within them. Through this, organic farming also supports more wildlife than non-organic farming.

Organic farming also uses much less energy than conventional agriculture, mostly because it doesn’t use nitrogen fertilizer and uses 30% less fossil fuels. They have also found that organic farming tends to hold more carbon in the soil, reducing carbon dioxide emissions. Carbon dioxide is an important greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change.

Is organic food more nutritious? Organic food has higher amounts of beneficial minerals, essential amino acids and vitamins. Research from around the world supports this statement.

Research also shows that buying organic reduces many illness ad disease risks associated with non-organic agriculture and food. Farmers and food processors will respond to consumer demand; they will use fewer pesticides, fertilizers, additives, antibiotics etc. It is our responsibility as a consumer, however, to be prepared to pay more for our food so that farmers can change their practices.

The Naturopathic approach to the Flu is founded on supporting and optimizing the body’s defensive capabilities and immune system. This is accomplished by ensuring that there are no underlying disruptors of health that can undermine the immune system’s ability to react properly. This is not a vaccination against a specific strain of virus!

An important point here is that an immune reaction is not an “bad” reaction, for example the body will develop a fever or reduce appetite as part of the defensive action to eliminate the infectious agent by using body heat and the natural substances that are released with a fever or by “starving” out the bug though appetite suppression. An immune system that has trouble clearing the invading bug within a healthy time frame of 24 to 48 hours, to 5 days at the very most, is a troubled immune system. This immune system needs support!

The homeopathic immune-support flu shot with four potent remedies for those who prefer a natural flu shot alternative. It also is available in oral liquid or tablet form. The flu shot is a single dose injection into the muscle of the rear shoulder or buttock.

GERMANY

My annual trip to Germany’s Medicine Week, traditionally held in Baden Baden, is my perennial professional travel highlight. Besides being the birth place of Naturopathic Medicine, Germany and Medicine Week have led the way in Naturopathy’s education and practice. Most European doctors practicing naturopathy and homeopathy make Medicine Week the highest professional priority in their continuing education. I always return with the latest for my patients, and I promise them that their naturopathic care is second to none.

As for North American Naturopathic Doctors, Medicine Week in Germany is not an annual destination for their continuing education curriculum. Dr. Arrigo wants his patients to know and feel confident that this education week is, in the end, important for them! The knowledge shared at this conference still adheres to the old world philosophy but with modern engineering and technology in medical devices, which, as we all know, is the Germans prime passion.

MONACO

My trip to Monaco’s Anti-Aging Medicine World Congress in March of 2009 was overwhelmingly informative. It was more apparent by every passing moment that I was probably the lone Naturopath in the Princess Grace Congress Hall filled with plastic surgeons and cosmetic doctors. The infrequent, but very welcoming, sites of some antioxidant supplements to fight aging was some semblance that natural medicine has its place in an arena jammed with fillers, Botox, and surgical equipment.

My goal in attending these weekend conventions and seminars is to sift through a sea of very innovative and cutting-edge medicine. The anti-aging medical field is very young and quickly growing. As you can imagine, the demand for the fountain of youth is universal. We may not all want to live forever, nor look wrinkle-free and aesthetically youthful, but I state with certainty that we would all welcome the scientific cure to age-related problems or diseases that ravage all of us with time.

I am, and possibly obsequiously, obsessed with chasing the age old mystery behind aging. For myself, the enticing field of study in the underlying aging pathways that go astray is such an irresistible and passionate infatuation that has taken hold of my inner most drive to cure my patients.

I have, so far, in practice witnessed an exceedingly disproportionate of age-related problems, that could have been prevented with timely and non-invasive medicine, culminate into devastating illnesses and diseases. The ignorance in implementing interventions early in the non-ill state, when health seems to be disease-free, is our medical field’s biggest sin. It is tragic to allow the bad lifestyle habits to slowly propagate into full-blown diseases. All these lifestyle age-related diseases, not including the genetic diseases, can and should be given more import earlier in their development.

We have waited too long! The medical community treats and palliates signs and symptoms supported with strong vested interest by pharmaceutical companies. The intent of all parties involved is genuine on the fundamental level, which is to treat and cure diseases and people, but the visionary acuity to see the forest for the tress is lacking, if not criminal.

I am contnually attempting to include as much discernible information in my Anti-Aging & Aestheic Medicine presentations. The presentations will be updated as frequent as I can gather and process new content.
